During the forum day, Janneke van der Loo (Tilburg University), together with Lieve de Wachter (KU Leuven) and Renske Bouwer (UU), will deliver a keynote discussing the possibilities and challenges of responsibly using generative AI such as ChatGPT in higher education writing instruction. Drawing from our experiences at the three different institutions – KU Leuven, Utrecht University, and Tilburg University – we will take stock of the past year and look ahead. Through concrete examples, we will illustrate how GenAI exposes problems in (writing) education that have always existed, and why the evolution of GenAI also offers opportunities for further refining language policy in higher education, especially in writing. Thus, it is more important than ever, with the presence of GenAI, to focus on the writing process rather than the product. We will illustrate this through concrete cases and research from the three institutions.
