Workshop TLC: Canvas Quizzes with AI-generated feedback

Canvas Quizzes are commonly used as a simple tool to provide students with insight into their level of knowledge on a particular topic. It remains unclear, however, how useful a score on quiz is to students who are expected to improve their performance. Meaningful, written feedback may provide students with more specific and applicable information but takes a long time to produce for lecturers. In this workshop, ChatGPT is used to produce feedback and pros and cons of this method will be discussed. In addition, we will look at how to use this feedback in the Canvas Quiz settings.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this workshop, you can:

• Identify some of the basics of formative assessment.
• Identify which question types in Canvas can be provided with feedback.
• Generate effective feedback using a Large Language Model.
• Fill in a Canvas Quiz with the feedback generated by a Large Language Model.

Target group and method

• Lecturers, course coordinators, and support staff interested in (a) assessment with a formative goal, (b) creating appropriate feedback in assessments with a formative goal, (c) applying output from Large Language Models in creating Canvas Quizzes.
• The workshop will be conducted in small groups with a maximum of 8 participants.
• The workshop will be in English unless all participants are able to participate in Dutch.
